can I use knitting yarn for needlepoint?

I need a lot of furry, fuzzy yarn for an item on my needlepoint project. For this only can I use a yarn they have at Michaels? It is for the collar, sleeves and hem of Santa's coat.

It should be fine. The only thing I would be worried about is the thickness of the yarn.
