“We went for a hike. The beach was a tumble of exposed bedrock, some formations looking like model pirate ships in silhouette, but soon the gravel narrowed and an outcrop of jagged rock faced us. The girls scrambled up a well-used trail, and then I saw Grace climbing, hand over ha nd, up the final short rock wall. I was about to yell my customary warning, but she had summited and Bailey was on her heels. They raised their arms, the Lake Superior wind whipping their hair, and I breathed two words: their Everest.”
â€"from the text by Chris Niskanen

Minnesota is home to prairies and forests, lakes and rivers, bison and gray wolfâ€"and a treasured system of state parks. Emblems of natural history, many were created to protect an ecosystem such as the giant hardwood trees at Nerstrand Big Woods, features like the spectacular waterfalls at Gooseberry or limestone caves at Forestville, and historic structures such as the early settlement of Fort Ridgely along the Minnesota River. Recreational opportunities are equally diverseâ€" and so are the people who pursue them.

Photographer Doug Ohman visited each of Minnesota’s sixty-six parks to capture th eir classic beauty, storied wildlife, and wealth of activities in all seasons. More than two hundred color photographs illustrate sixteen essays by outdoors writer Chris Niskanen, who chronicles the sights, sounds, and experiences of exploring the parks through the eyes of those who know them bestâ€"rangers, naturalists, and long-time users. There is the
traveling salesman who is also an avid birdwatcher; a couple so excited about their state parks adventures that they worked geocaching into their wedding theme; and daughters on a camping trip to the rocky outcrops of
Lake Superior’s North Shore, a personal tale recounted by Niskanen.

The result is an elegant package of memories for those who frequent the parksâ€"and an invitation to all comers to see Minnesota’s natural world at its best.

Photographer Doug Ohman’s work is featured in the Minnesota Byways se ries, which includes Barns of Minnesota and Cabins of Minnesota. Chris Niskanen is outdoors editor for the St. Paul Pioneer Press and also contributes to Minnesota Conservation Volunteer magazine.

Make Animal Sculptures with Paper Mache Clay: How to Create Stunning Wildlife Art Using Patterns and My Easy-to-Make, No-Mess Paper Mache Recipe

If you've always wanted to create life-like animal sculptures, but you thought it would be "too hard" or "too expensive," you're in for a very pleasant surprise. This book contains step-by-step instructions and over 250 ph otos to guide you through the enjoyable process of making realistic animal sculptures in a whole new way.

Jonni Good's easy techniques help you create stunning wildlife art without the mess usually associated with papier mache - and the patterns included in each chapter guarantee that your sculptures will be perfectly shaped and proportioned from the very start.

Paper mache clay takes about 5 minutes to make, using inexpensive ingredients. Applying the clay to your form is as easy as frosting a cake. It goes on smooth, and dries hard and strong. It's easy to form life-like details like eyes and noses, fur and scales. Then finish your sculptures with acrylic paints to bring them to life. Jonni even shows you how to crea te your own patterns from original drawings or photos, so you can use her techniques to sculpt any animal you like.

Creating life-like animal sculptures has never been so easy, or so much fun!

The Historical Nights' Entertainment

In approaching "The Historical Nights' Entertainment" I set myself the task of reconstructing, in the fullest possible detail and with all the colour available from surviving records, a group of more or less famous events. I would select for my purpose those which were in themselves bizarre and resulting from the interplay of human passions, and whilst relating each of these events in the form of a story, I would compel that story scrupulously to follow the actual, recorded facts without owing anything to fiction, and I would draw upon my imagination, if at all, merely as one might employ colour to fill in the outlines which history leaves grey, taking care that my colour should be as true to nature as possible. For dialogue I would depend upon such scraps of actual speech as were chronicled in each case, amplifying it by translating into terms of speech the paraphrases of contemporary chroniclers.

Jesus Religion: A Critical Examination of Christian Insanity

In his book, Jesus Religion, Louis Charles presents a logical argument, revealing the insanity that has been created by Christian theology. Learn some of the historical facts surrounding the creation of Christianity and the Bible, as well as Louis' personal experiences of searching for the truth behind fearful Christian teachings. Having formerly suffered from fear caused by the Christian idea of an eternal Hell, Louis shares the path, as well as spiritual insights, that eventually set him free. "I know there are others out in the world like me, who know something is wrong with Christianity's claims. Some may still be sitting in the back of a church service somewhere on Sundays, while others have possibly left Christianity altogether. Wherever you are in your spiritual journey, this book is for you." - Louis Charles

by Anne Helmond

Question by quattro: How to send personal effects and household items from Toronto Canada to Philippines?

How to send personal effects and household items from Toronto Canada to Philippines. We acquired Canadian citizenship 5 years ago. We want to go back to Philippines for good. Therefore we wish to take all our personal effect and household items (furnitures, appliances, electronics, etc) with us. What is the best cargo company to use and how much would be the cost of it. Is there any applicable tax that I have to pay to Philippine customs.Thank you

Best answer:

Answer by jd
Try the yellow pages under shipping containers.
There shouldn't be a lot of taxes on house hold items.
You might want to consider the cost of replacement as opposed to shipping. Remember the voltage too.,

The role of caring adults, points out the author, isn't to give children "lessons in life" (life brings its own lessons and its own frustrations), but to parent children the way we wish we had been treated in child hood. The Natural Child dispels the myths of "tough love" and building baby's self-reliance by ignoring its cries, and explains the importance of extended breast-feeding and why the homeschool environment can provide more socialization opportunities than public schools.

Question by Nikke:

Can I water my outdoor plants and flowers with my well water?

We cannot drink the water. It was not recommended anyway by a water purification company. We buy gallons of water to cook with and drink. Apparently the well water has a high sulfur content in it and we cannot consume it.
Can I water my outdoor plants with it being it does come from the same ground the plants and flowers grow in?

Question by melon_rose: For a beginning cook, why does cooking and meal / menu planning seem like such a daunting task?

it's like... not only do i not really know how to cook... i feel like the planning and shopping is hard to figure out / balance out too. and finding time for it all.
how did you guys start out cooking/menu planning?

Best answer:

Answer by dragonrider707
KIS...Keep it simple. It depends on how many you are cooking for but start out by going to a cooking site and finding some easy recipes. Find 7 of them...one for each day and write the ingredients on a piece of paper and use it as a shopping list for your weeks groceries. Make sure you dont double up on things...if one recipe uses 2 eggs and another uses 1 and another uses 4 dont go buyi ng 3 dozen eggs. Just buy 1 dozen and use what you need. Once you learn how to make a few meals this way you can start to modify the recipes by adding or taking away things you like or dislike. For example if you are making a stew you might like to add mushrooms but you might not like carrots very much so you can leave them out. After a while you build up a repertoire of things you can cook and it's not so hard to figure out what to buy at the supermarket because it is all in your head.

Sukhothai is a very interesting Thailand historical site which captures the ancient history of Thailand. The early years of Thai history details the internal struggles within the Thai provinces and the kingdoms. Eventually the neighboring countries of Burma, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam begin to come into play, as the documented cross border invasions begin to take their toll, bringing down Sukhothai, and eventually Ayutthai.

This is a picture of Phra Achana, Wat Si Chum, in the historical park of Sukothai. The Buddah statute is more than 700 years old and is 48 feet tall. In 1991, the Sukhothai national historical park was designated a world hertitage site.
